Typewriting and Typewriter Source Examination

Documents produced on a typewriter carry a mechanical “fingerprint”. Over time, every typewriter key leaves its own distinctive mark through wear, bending and the way it distributes ink. These marks – accidental characteristics – allow us to determine conclusively which machine a document was typed on.

Detecting Accidental Characteristics: Microscopic deformations in the typefaces and deviations in line alignment are the most concrete evidence used to identify a typewriter.

  • Mechanical Identification Analysis of the striking force and angle of the typed characters.
  • Ribbon and Ink Analysis Examination of the type of typewriter ribbon and how heavily it has been used.
  • Chronological Verification Consistency of the document’s date with the typewriter model.

Legal basis

Legal Framework and Reference Sources for Typewriting Examination

Typewritten documents have been the subject of significant legal proceedings in the Turkish courts for many years. Typewriter source identification establishes scientifically which machine a document was typed on. The statutory provisions and institutional sources below form the legal basis of these examinations.

  • TCK Article 204 — Forgery of Official Documents

Under the Turkish Criminal Code (TCK), producing a false typewritten official document or altering one is punishable under this article by 2–5 years’ imprisonment. Where the offence is committed by a public official, the penalty increases to 3–8 years.
